Climate Change
The world's prolonged exposure to some of the most lethal greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, is lethally impacting not only the ecosystems we inhabit but also a great array of populations in these areas. We can see the negative change, from the recent California Wildfires to the dying Great Coral Reefs in the ocean. Our normal lives are at risk, and nothing can change unless we present a united front against the most dangerous event in modern history.
Climate Change worsens dramatically with each passing day. According to NASA, carbon dioxide levels in the air are at their highest in 650,000 years; the global temperature has increased 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880, with 19 of the 20 warmest years on record taking place since 2001; the arctic ice minimum decreases a total of 12.85% in magnitude each year, and sea levels continually rise a total of 3.3 millimeters per year. These numbers are not only astounding but scary because they threaten to extinguish life on Earth as we know it. They mean increased droughts and heatwaves, a greater number of stronger natural disasters, the disappearance of our most beloved islands and seashores, increasing wildfires, increased insect outbreaks… If I continue, I may be going on forever.
The majority, if not all, of such change, stems from human action. This is why cumulative human action is the only way to reverse the damage we have done. I know it may not seem like one decision counts, but the truth is they all do. Recycling, for example, helps decrease greenhouse gases that may have otherwise been affecting our world at a faster rate than they are now. This is why I've made it easier for Passaic residents to recycle, and even provided free calendars that show the recycling dates for Passaic in their specified living area. This is also why I support Governor Murphy's climate change agenda that will help propel NJ to 100% clean energy by the year 2050. I know that together, we can make the City of Passaic an environmentally-clean, green environment.
